Let’s face it, Monday’s suck. It’s not the day so much as it is that the majority of us are coming off of the weekend where we could sleep in, wear pajamas all day, and live life on our own terms. Which for me means maybe wearing pants, and staying out past 9!
Lately, I’ve really been struggling to juggle my full time gig in marketing as well as my blog and other personal ventures. I’ve been lacking motivation and the stamina to knock out everything that I have to do in both regards. I could sit here and cry about it, or I could try to find solutions to change it. (FYI, totally fine to cry..I’ve done it many times.) Being an overall positive person in general though, I opted to incorporate small changes in to my daily routine that would help my motivation and mindset remain positive and productive throughout the week.
Below are some of the ways that I’ve found I can shift my thinking and attitude to help create a more positive outlook, and set the tone for the entire week. After all, we could all use a kick in the ass on occasion, or a few in my experience.
Wake up, caffeinate, and stay off of the internet!
This day and age, we don’t know how to lead lives unless it’s behind the safety of our phone screen. As soon as I open my email, my Instagram, my bank account, my mind is off and running, and GOOD LUCK getting it back into that restful peaceful place. I think this is a great rule for every day, but ESPECIALLY Monday’s. I typically won’t look at my emails or Instagram until I get to work. Call me a shitty blogger or businesswoman, but I need that time during my commute to think about how I want my day and my week to go.
Affirmations, affirmations, affirmations!
I don’t care if you think I’m nuts, I’ll talk to myself all day if it will help me to focus and maintain a positive mindset. Wether it’s just simply being positive or to channel wealth and money making opportunities, I mentally and verbally talk it out. This often happens before I get out of bed because I prefer to prolong the inevitable, or on my commute to work. I honesty don’t do this as often as I should, so when I do, trust that I REALLY need it! There are a ton of resources for different affirmations depending on what you are looking to channel. I suggest checking out Pinterest, or listening to different YouTube videos to get you started. Remember, repetition is key!
Caffeinate and chill
You all know that I love coffee more than I love margaritas, and that says A LOT! I’m pretty much a coffee and water kind of girl, so limiting your caffeine is probably a little out of the norm for me. However, I’ve found that when I drink too much coffee and over caffeinate, I lose my touch. When I say that, I mean there’s a sweet spot for me where I’ve had my coffee, my thinking is on point, and I can take on the world. When I drink too much, I give myself heavy anxiety and very well may give myself a panic attack one day. So I’ve had to start slowly cutting back on how much I drink. Slowly, because Holy headache!
Work out
Exercising is single handedly the ONE thing that can help me de-stress. No drink, no massage, and no day off can help me feel the relief I do after a really good work out. To be honest with you, I usually skip Monday’s because I’m always scheduled to work late, but I made it this Monday by default because it’s Hell Week and I really want that free t shirt. (Oh the things we will do for a freebie.) I felt so great after, that I plan to go regularly on Monday’s because it helps to maintain the mindset I worked so hard to set the tone for earlier in the day.
Choose your environment
If you want to be positive, you need to surround yourself with positive things, and positive people. Listen up, I know we all have to take our asses to work and it’s certainly not always full of positive things and positive people. What I mean by this, is choose who you want to surround yourself with or engage in conversation. If you can’t do that, choose your response. Keep in mind, a response doesn’t always have to be verbal. Sometimes no response is quite enough on its own. If catty Cathy at work never has a nice thing to say about anyone, let her be catty and miserable on her own. If boastful Betty won’t shut up about how great she is, let her keep talking. Your lack of response will let them know to take that conversation elsewhere next time. Will they call you a bitch? Probably. But chances are, people like that probably have already. Do you, boo.
Music feeds the Soul
My Husband doesn’t understand why I always need some sort of background noise. He doesn’t understand that sometimes noise drowns our the garbage in my head, and I prefer that it come in the form of music. There’s a song for any mood, and I use music to get myself to do all the things I don’t want to do. Ghetto rap gets me to the gym, and also sometimes to work. When I want to chill and drive, I choose country or sometimes house. When I’m laying on a beach or fishing, I prefer reggae and country. My point is, music enhances your mood and it should align with your immediate goal. Don’t play angry rap music to go chill on the couch with Grandma. Not the right mindset, people! But use it to fuel your mood when the need should arise.
These small adjustments to my daily routine help me to set the tone for my week and get the most out of it. These are things I tend to do often, but not necessarily with intent to have a great day and week. I think that’s the biggest takeaway I have learned personally, from any course, podcast, or motivational book. Positive, happy, people are that way because they choose to be. It doesn’t mean it happens naturally, so we have to be aware of the choices we make daily and how they effect our big picture.
